Reach Cortona by Car

Take the main high way A1 superstrada del Sole, from either directions Rome or Florence.  Exit to the signposted “Bettolle” then follow the road signs to “Perugia” which will lead you on to the E45 road, and then take the second exit, signposted “Cortona San Lorenzo”. From here follow the road signs for Cortona, and after only a five minute drive, the hill of Cortona will appear in the distance.

Reach Cortona by Train

Reaching Cortona via train from ROME, PISA, FLORENCE or VENICE

ROME with slow train: Take the Regionale train RE (local train) this will stop to Camucia-Cortona train station, the closest station to Cortona (3 km.) The train takes about 2 hours and 25 minutes. Single ticket fare is about 12 €.

ROME with fast train (Book from TrainLine Here) this train stop to Terontola train station (10 km from Cortona, from here to reach Cortona there use a Taxi service or the local buses.). This train will take about 1 hour and 45 minutes, the ticket fare is about 20€.

MILAN or VENICE: take the fast train (Book from TrainLine Here) to Florence (they will takes approximately about 2 hours).  Ticket fares start from 50 € up to 100 €  (Fares depends from the class tickets, booking period and availability). From Florence to Cortona read beow.

FLORENCE: take the Regionale train RE (Local train), which takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach the Camucia-Cortona train station, (the closest to Cortona only 3 km) . This Fare ticket is about 12 €.

AUTOBUS

The Camucia train station is connected to Cortona with a bus shuttle service.

The stop is located at the exit of the station, on your left.
The cost of the tickets is €1.50 per person.

Tickets can be purchased on board by credit card.

UPDATED BUS TIMETABLE

The bus service between Camucia station and Cortona is generally excellent and frequent, especially on weekdays (Monday to Friday).

Here’s what you need to know in brief:

  • General Frequency: Trips are very frequent and regular, especially during the morning (first ride around 6:00 am)  and late afternoon. During these times, you can expect a bus every 15-30 minutes on average.
  • Afternoon break: In the middle of the day and early afternoon, attendance tends to drop slightly.
  • Evening Hours: Trips end relatively early, around 7.30-8.00pm, depending on the direction. After this time, the possibility of traveling by bus is not guaranteed.
  • On Saturdays and Sundays the service is reduced.

Pick-up Locations

Coming from Rome

The most convenient option when traveling from Rome is to take a high-speed train to Chiusi station and rent your car there. Chiusi is located just 20 minutes from Cortona and is only two stops before the Cortona-Camucia station on the Rome-Florence line, making it the ideal pick-up point for travelers coming from the capital.

Coming from Florence

If you’re traveling from Florence by train, we recommend choosing the Arezzo station as your pick-up point. From Arezzo, it’s just a 28-minute drive to reach Cortona.

Unfortunately, there are no shops in Cortona where you can purchase a SIM card. However, there are several shops in the town of Camucia, just 6 km from Cortona, where you can obtain a SIM card.

TOURIST TAX

From April 15th, 2012, the Visitor’s Tax came into effect, as established by the Municipality of Cortona through Town Council resolution no. 20.

Who is required to pay the tax? Anyone staying for one or more nights in any accommodation within the town limits.

How much is the tax? The Visitor’s Tax for holidays varies based on the type of stay and ranges from €2 to €4 per person for the first four nights of your stay. Children under 12 years of age are exempt from this tax.
