Reaching Cortona on Foot

From Camucia Railway Station to Cortona Historic Centre

For trekking enthusiasts and beyond: this guide shows how to reach Cortona on foot from Camucia railway station, a nearby town located in the valley below.

Cortona stands at around 600 metres above sea level, approximately 4 kilometres from the station as the crow flies. In these pages we reveal a little-known trail that allows you to reach Cortona in just over half an hour, offering an authentic and evocative experience immersed in nature.

MAP PART 1

Crossing the Town of Camucia

Our journey begins at Camucia-Cortona railway station.

Overview of the first part of the route from the railway station.

Once out of Camucia railway station:

  • Head towards Via Domenico Boccardo.

At the next junction:

  • Continue along Via Alessandro Manzoni until you reach the SS45 main road.

At the next crossroads:

  • Cross the main road and continue along Via Fratelli Rosselli.

At the next junction on Via Fratelli Rosselli, continue straight ahead.

At the next junction you will enter Via Italo Scotoni, continue uphill keeping strictly to the right-hand side to avoid traffic. Around 200 metres ahead, Camucia and its traffic will be left behind.

At the junction by the municipal stadium, pay close attention!
Here you must take the path on your left, crossing the road, use the pedestrian crossing!
Congratulations, you are halfway through your journey!
Continue uphill, from this point on there will be no more traffic along your route!

TOWARDS CORTONA

Keep climbing!

  • Here the panorama behind you begins to grow captivating, with the Valdichiana valley opening up and Lake Trasimeno in nearby Umbria making its way into the view.

At the next junction:

  • Cross the road (watch out for cars!) and continue along the narrow unpaved track ahead of you.
  • The path passes close to some residential houses.
  • Follow it all the way to the next junction and pay attention not to take the wrong turn.

At the next junction, take a short break:

  • The path winds through olive groves before joining a busier road — pay close attention at the next stretch.

Shortcut Junction

  • Once you reach the paved road near a residential house, go around it and take the shortcut that will allow you to bypass the busier road.
  • Continue uphill along the path to the next junction.
  • Continue uphill along the right-hand path.
  • At the next junction you will begin to see the first houses of Cortona! Not long now…
  • At the end of the track, cross the paved road and continue straight ahead.
  • Keep going until the next junction, where you will find a pedestrian crossing with the ancient Etruscan walls of Cortona right in front of you.
    • Climb to the next junction and watch out for the busy road you will cross.
    • Use the pedestrian crossing and head towards Cortona!

    From here, to reach the main square, Piazza della Repubblica, pass through the medieval gate of Via Guelfa, which you will find just after the climb.

    Refreshment stop: Just past the Via Guelfa gate, you will find a small café on your left — Bar Atipico — perfect for a well-deserved break!
